A LTERNATE E NERGY S OURCES

C OUNTING D OWN Current projections estimate that the recoverable amount of fossil fuels will be used in 170 years. Fossil fuels currently supply 90% of the world’s energy needs. Fossil fuels use continues to damage the environment. What are the solutions? ADDMOVIE CLIP

S OLAR E NERGY Direct use of the sun’s rays for heat or electricity. Free and non- polluting Solar collectors trap energy or use it to heat objects Solar energy can be magnified and collected to turn turbines Drawbacks?

N UCLEAR E NERGY Energy from radioactive materials released during nuclear fission Neutrons bombard a heavy nucleus, which splits the atom and starts a chain reaction Meets about 7% of energy needs in the US Hazards are cost, possible exposure, and waste

N UCLEAR P OWER P LANT

W IND E NERGY Wind power could increase to 5- 10% of our use in the next 50 years. What were early uses of wind energy? A lot of space is needed for wind energy fields.

H YDROELECTRIC P OWER Power of falling water. Drives turbines to generate power. Currently meets 5% of US energy needs. Dams are often built to control the flow of water. Reservoir eventually fills with sediment, rendering the dam useless. Sites must be chosen carefully.

T IDAL P OWER / D AMS Ocean’s energy potential is HUGE! Moving tides are excellent sources of energy. A dam is built to trap water when the tide comes in and slowly release it after the tide is gone. Differential is created that can turn turbines!

G EOTHERMAL E NERGY From underground reservoirs of steam or hot water; this can be used directly for heating or driving turbines. Clean but not everlasting year lifespan for hot water. Not a long- term solution.

BIOMASS biological material biological material from living, or recently living organisms, such as wood, waste, (hydrogen) gas, and alcohol fuels.

A SSIGNMENT Create an energy flow chart with renewable and non renewable forms of energy. Hint: 1 bubble becomes 2. At the bottom, make 3 illustrations of any energy types that you choose. COMPLETE PG. 107 (1-6) Complete Sentences
