Organization How you structure your paper in order to present you information in a logical order. Voice The tone of the paper that makes the paper sound like you are the author WRITING TRAITS AND DEFINITIONS

Sentence Fluency The flow of your sentences. This includes varying the length. Conventions The grammatical correctness of your paper WRITING TRAITS AND DEFINITIONS

Thesis Statement The thesis statement is a one to two sentence summary of what information will be in your paper. It usually is in the introduction. Introduction The introduction “hooks” your audience by using engaging methods of writing and contains the thesis statement. TERMINOLOGY FOR WRITING

Body The main content of your paper. This is where you produce the supporting reasons that uphold your main idea. Supportive Reasons Part of the body of writing. Each supportive reason should add value to or “support” your main idea. Each supportive reason should have it’s own paragraph (s). TERMINOLOGY FOR WRITING

Conclusion The conclusion is at the end of the paper. It summarizes or “wraps” up any loose ends that need to be concluded at the end of your paper. Sources Sources add validity to your information. Sources can be books, periodicals, websites, interviews, etc. Each source should be properly cited. TERMINOLOGY FOR WRITING

Citation Citation is how we give credit to a source for the information we used in our papers. We use the MLA citation format for English class. MLA (Modern Language Association) Is an association of scholars and teachers who created a citation method for MS to Higher Ed classrooms to use for academic writing. TERMINOLOGY FOR WRITING

Format How a paper is prepared and presented to its audience. Paragraph A group of 3 to 5 sentences that are related and grouped together for logical comprehension. TERMINOLOGY FOR WRITING

Peer Review When someone of compatible age or ability is asked to look over and add commentary or corrections to your writing. Copyright Protecting the author’s ability to own their creations with laws and warnings. TERMINOLOGY FOR WRITING

Plagiarism Taking a written work or anything that does not belong to you and claiming it as your own. Can be done consciously or unconsciously. Rough Draft A very unfinished beginning to a final draft of a written work. TERMINOLOGY FOR WRITING

Jargon Words that are familiar to a certain group or people in a particular profession. Example: CCSS Hook Something in the introduction that the author uses to “grab” the audiences attention. TERMINOLOGY FOR WRITING

Proofreading Checking a paper for grammatical errors or word choice issues. Syntax Putting words into a pattern or phrase that creates meaning within the sentence. TERMINOLOGY FOR WRITING

Sentence Fragment A sentence that is missing some of the key parts for comprehension. This includes subject, verb or both. Simile Comparing two things with words “like” or “as.” Example: Her eyes shown bright like a diamond in the night. TERMINOLOGY FOR WRITING
