1 Writing & Presenting the Interview Speech
Now it’s time to turn your notes into a speech

2 Hopefully, you took copious (many) notes during your interview
Hopefully, you took copious (many) notes during your interview. Now, you need to organize your information into a logical outline Probably the easiest way to organize all the information is to read back through your notes. You need to think about what the audience would like to know about the person you interviewed. Pick three main themes or ideas that you talked about during the interview. These will become the three main points of your speech. Once you have wrapped your brain around the three main things you are going to talk about in your speech, you need to write out an outline. Step 1

3 Step 2 How do I write an outline?
This outline will help you write a speech in a narrative format. I. Introduction Start with a humorous or interesting anecdote or fact that the person told you. Thesis statement: A thesis statement is one sentence that tells who was interviewed. Basically, what do you plan to tell your audience about this person? This must be in the introduction, and you must pronounce the person's name correctly. II. Body paragraph 1: One big idea you learned III. Body paragraph 2: Second big idea you learned III. Body paragraph 3: Third big idea you learned IV. Conclusion: You need to wrap up your speech by summarizing some concluding remarks about the person. Step 2

4 Step 3 How do I turn the outline into a speech?
Rough draft time! Using your outline, begin by writing your introduction, followed by the three main points you want to share about your new friend. Add details as you go. End with a summary of your friend, this is not the time to add new information! Once you have a rough draft written, you need someone to peer-edit your paper. Then, you can write the final copy onto your notecard. Practice giving your speech!!! Remember…this speech is going to be short…no more than 1-2 minutes, so you cannot include everything from your original notes. Again, choose the information you found most interesting about your new best friend! Step 3

5 Step 4 Time to give the speech
Practice giving your speech to a friend, a mirror, a parent, or the wall. Again, practice! Stand tall, look at your audience to engage them, smile (don’t laugh nervously), and begin speaking. When you are nervous it is easy to move around or laugh, but you need to avoid this. Also to be avoided is using, “um.” This is easier to avoid if you practice! Keep eye contact! Acknowledge that the person you are speaking about is standing right next to you! Make sure your audience knows when you have concluded…don’t leave them hanging. Step 4
