Cause-and-Effect Essay Body Paragraphs and Conclusion

Essay Outline Paragraph 1= Introduction Paragraph 2=Body Paragraph Paragraph 3=Body Paragraph Paragraph 4=Body Paragraph Paragraph 5=Conclusion

What Goes in the Body Paragraphs? All of your information! They are each about one, specific point that proves your thesis. So you will need 3 examples to prove your thesis! In this case, they are going to be about either 3 causes or 3 effects of your thesis.

Remember the fleas? My thesis from last week was: –Flea bites can cause itching because of the allergic reaction that people experience after being bit. So now I need to write about 3 causes for the itching.

Where do I find this information? Do some research! You may use the internet as long as you properly cite your sources. –Failure to do so will result in a zero…don’t plagiarize!

I found my research! Now what? Three reasons why fleabites cause itching: 1.Allergic reaction 2.Bacteria or virus 3.Tapeworm *Found on: ffects_of_bites

Body Paragraph One According to Wikipedia, “[s]ome people and animals suffer allergic reactions to flea saliva resulting in rashes.” These rashes can later turn itchy. Once people find that their rash is itchy, they sometimes begin to scratch at it. This is not a good thing to do, because scratching the itch may cause the rash to spread and may lead to infection. It is better to treat the rash with an anti-itch cream and leave it alone.

Things to Notice In my body paragraph, I quoted my research. –I did not come up with that information on my own, so I had to cite the source – Wikipedia – and put quotation marks around the information that I found. –If you do not quote the information directly (that is, word-for-word), you still MUST cite the source.

Body Paragraph 2 Fleabites also itch because of bacteria or even viruses that fleas spread. Wikipedia mentions that fleabites have caused serious diseases such as the bubonic plague which nearly wiped out Europe. The bacteria that fleas can spread may cause the skin to become inflamed and even itch. Because of the danger of getting terminally ill, it is important to be sure to protect oneself and one’s animals from fleas.

Things to Notice Even though I did not quote Wikipedia word-for-word (that is, used quotations), I still mentioned their name because I did not come up with that information. –Failure to mention your resource is plagiarism! Also note that I have been writing in the 3 rd person. –I said, “It is important to protect oneself.. –I did NOT say, “It is important to protect yourself

Body Paragraph 3 Another reason that fleabites itch could possibly be because of tapeworms. It is true, An “infestation of tapeworm” is a problem posed by fleas. ( /wiki/Flea#Direct_effects_of_bites) While that may sound disgusting, it is most certainly a possibility. Again, it is better to protect oneself against fleas through preventative measures rather than face the unfortunate possibility of tapeworms.

Things to Notice I used a blended quote and then used parenthetical citations after my quotation. –I blended the quotation into a sentence, and then I put my source information in parentheses.

Conclusion What is a conclusion?? –You are concluding all of your information in your essay. You restate your thesis. You sum up all of your main points. You make a final comment. –YOU DO NOT EVER EVER EVER SAY: Now you know why… This is why I think that…

Example In the end, fleabites are itchy little annoyances that people experience from time to time. The itching can be caused from a variety of things such as an allergic reaction, bacteria, viruses, or even tapeworms. Because of the discomfort and potential problems associated with fleabites, it is best to take preventative measures and protect oneself and one’s animals from fleas. After all, no one wants to experience a second bubonic plague!
