AIAA Diversity Working Group (DWG) AIAA Board of Directors chartered the Diversity Working Group in February 2015 Purpose: To advance and support diversity in the AIAA community AIAA Strategic Plan:  Strategic Imperative: Developing and expanding our community  Prioritized Objective: engaging underrepresented constituencies 2

DWG Responsibilities Build a common understanding, purpose, and shared commitment to improving diversity within AIAA, and by extension the Aerospace industry as a whole. Identify, implement and oversee actions that will address diversity. Identify and recommend organizations, government agencies, etc. with whom partnering supports the Working Group’s purpose Elicit feedback from AIAA members and organizations about the types of support and services they would like from a diverse and inclusive organization. 3

Leadership, Growth, and Retention Subgroup Identify and develop opportunities to keep underrepresented constituencies connected to AIAA, and foster their leadership and growth Chair: Hernando Jimenez, Ph.D. (Georgia Institute of Technology) 4

Outreach Subgroup 1.Professional Outreach  Identify and recommend professional and nonprofit organizations with which AIAA should formulate strategic partnerships 2.Industry & Academic Outreach  Identify individuals from underrepresented constituencies for awards, committee participation, and membership elevation 3.Academic Outreach  Work with student groups to promote diversity and engagement Chairs: TBD 5

Diversity Programming Subgroup Chair: Hsiao-hua K. Burke, Ph.D. (MIT Lincoln Laboratory, AIAA Fellow) Identify and develop programs that will provide education, awareness, support, and growth of diversity within AIAA 6

Communications Subgroup OBJECTIVE: Communicate with AIAA members, sponsors, and the public about diversity and diversity efforts within AIAA. CHANNELS (pending adequate WG participation): 1.Within Working Groups & AIAA WG staff 2.Formal within AIAA 3.Informal through social media and Diversity WG members Near-term goal: Create a subgroup within AIAA LinkedIn Group for “Diversity in Aerospace” Chair: Brett Hoffstadt (How to be a rocket scientist) 7

Activity Thrusts Promote membership diversity in technical, program, and standing committees Encourage and support the nomination/candidacy of qualified women and minority members to AIAA awards, leadership roles, and membership elevation Retain the diverse body of student members beyond graduation by supporting their transition to regular membership Raise awareness of the importance of having qualified women and minority speakers at AIAA events 8

Where we need your help 1.Do you have a diversity action plan? 2.How do we find and attract women and minorities who are not AIAA members? 3.How do we improve the diversity of AIAA committees & leadership? 4.How do we increase the number of women and minority associate fellows and fellows? 5.How can we partner with industry, government, and academia to attract and retain more women and underrepresented minorities? 6.How do we avoid alienating a significant portion of the current membership when promoting diversity? 9
