Collaborative Assessment Conference Protocol Qualitative Data Example Source Protocol recommended group size of: 5-10 people

During Any Protocol Process We Are:

Step 1: Getting Started  Choose a Facilitator  Student work is available for all participants  No background of work is provided  Participants observe or read work in silence- brief notes on individual observations

Step 2: Describing the Work  Facilitator Asks:  What do you see?  Group members provide answers without making judgments about quality of work or personal bias  If a judgment emerges, facilitator asks for the evidence on which the judgment is based

Step 3: Asking Questions About the Work  Facilitator Asks:  What questions does this work raise for you? (group members state any questions they have about the work, the child, the assignment…)  Presenting teacher may jot down questions posed but does not answer them yet

Step 4: Speculating About What the Student is Working On  Facilitator asks:  What do you think the child is working on?  Participants bases on their reading or observations of the work, to answer this question

Step 5: Hearing From the Presenting Teacher  Facilitator invites the presenting teacher to speak  Perspective of the student’s work, describing what they see in it, may respond to some of the questions raised, adding information deemed important to context  Comments on anything surprising or unexpected that they heard during describing, questioning and speculating steps

Step 6: Discussing Implications for Teaching & Learning  Facilitator invites everyone to share any thoughts they have about:  their own teaching  children’s learning  Ways to support this particular child in future instruction

Step 7: Reflecting on the Collaborative Assessment Conference  The group reflects on the experiences of or reactions to the conference as a whole or to particular parts of it

Step 8: Thank the Presenting Teacher
