1 Los Angeles New Administrators Leadership Program Unit of Study 9 Conversations with Educators March 17, 2016

2 “ “While no single conversation is guaranteed to transform a company, a relationship, or a life, any single conversation can. Speak and listen as if this is the most important conversation you will ever have with this person.” Susan Scott

3 Purpose for Today To help candidates frame a particular problem and collect and present evidence that bears on the problem To help candidates examine both the problem and the evidence from both warm and cool perspectives To have candidates look at their leadership role in this work through a structured process

4 Tuning Protocol Overview Presentation of Dilemma (5 mins) Clarifying Questions (5 mins) Probing Questions (8 mins) Reflection on Probing Questions (2 mins) Conversation (10 mins) Pause to Reflect (2-3 mins) Warm and Cool Feedback (5 mins) Reflection (5 mins) Debrief of Process (2-3 mins) Complete Feedback Template (8 mins) Total Time: 54 mins

5 Suggested Group Norms Trust the Process Give All Voices the Chance to be Heard Stay Focused on Today’s Purpose ▪ To help our Candidates think more expansively about a particular, concrete dilemma and their leadership role in this work through a structured process Assume Good Intentions

6 Presentation of Dilemma Presenter gives overview of the dilemma Participants jot down “clarifying” & “probing” questions

7 Participants Ask Clarifying Questions (Go Around) Questions that have BRIEF, FACTUAL answers – “Who”, ”What”, “Where”, “When” – For participants’ understanding – To respond to dilemma better

8 Participants Ask Probing Questions (Go Around) Questions that are meant to expand candidate’s thinking about the dilemma – “How” & “Why” – Want the candidate to learn more about his focus topic or do more analysis of the dilemma – Candidate will NOT respond to probing questions at this time. Reflecting on Probing Question – Presenter will respond to one question that is causing him to think more deeply about the dilemma. There is no discussion.

9 Conversation Presenter and participants engage in open conversation Possible discussion questions: – What did we hear? – What questions does the dilemma raise for us? – What assumptions are residing in this dilemma? – What have we done in similar situations? Presenter takes notes

10 Warm and Cool Feedback Participants takes a couple of minutes to silently reflect on what they would like to contribute to the feedback session Participants share feedback with each other while presenter is silent – Begin with a few minutes of warm feedback, move on to a few minutes of cool feedback – Warm feedback - dilemma is clear, information helped establish the context – Cool feedback - possible “disconnects”, gaps or problems. Presenter may take notes, but participants will note comments on the feedback form

11 Reflection The presenter reacts to any response he or she chooses to react to. – The response is not meant to answer a question – The response is not meant to be a place to defend the presenter’s position – The response is to allow the presenter a place to talk about her or his thinking – Participants may not speak

12 Debrief - Process Participants reflect on the process – How did you experience the protocol? – How did it feel having specific actions to do and not do? – How did it feel giving/hearing warm and cool feedback? – How can you apply this protocol back at your site? This debrief will only be conducted at the end of the first session of the night

13 Presentation Feedback Review Feedback Form Please use the rest of the time for thoughtful feedback Completely fill out the form Please leave your completed feedback form with the facilitator
