Interactive Whiteboard Ideas By Kim Scott

Start of the Day (Juniors): This helps identify who isn’t at school and it is part of the before school routine (They drag their name across).

Start of the Day (Middle/Senior): This helps the students get themselves ready for the day and prepared for school. Some interactivity is vital!!

Oral Language Using a digital copy means that it can be saved if you want it to. The children could do this before school.

Before School: Perhaps leaving this up before school might generate some writing and discussion, and can then be used for writing or oral language programmes.

Class Demonstration – New Learning This gives students time to process new information and is great for the introduction of new core knowledge.

Hot Spotting - Maths Group work is so much easier if everyone can work together to relearn new knowledge. Discussion is vital!

Introducing New Formats The introduction of this character format was introduced at the start of the reading session.

Using their tools Many of the IWB programmes have tools like rolling dice, countdown clocks etc. What does yours have?

Handwriting By preparing all the handwriting templates first it means that you simply need to add the date and then write over the top of the letters already on screen.

Building School–wide Understandings Building school-wide understandings often needs lots of clear examples and discussion. Using an IWB means that everyone can see and hear the session.

Goal Setting: The benefit of writing this up on the IWB is that it can be saved and the template used each week.

Brainstorming A great way to record initial ideas which can be saved and then added to later (in different colours)

Interactive – Web Links: Using existing web pages and pictures can save time and energy. Adapting them is easy, so have a go!!

Teaching Progressions: A wonderful way to show students learning over time. Outlines can be premade in advance so that progressions can be charted easily.

Reflection: A great way to see how a group or whole class saw their session, day etc. Can be saved and used to start the next session on the same topic.

Evaluation: A great way to finish the day and discuss the emoticons used. Promotes reflection of the day.

Homework Reminders This is a great way to remind all students what their homework is. Can be completed each day in a junior room and can be used for forward planning for seniors.
