Telling time
Quelle heure est-il? Il est… Add the number of the hour that it is, follow by the word “heure”.
If the hour is more than one, add an –s to the word heure. If it is midnight, use minuit. If it is noon, use midi. Don’t use the word heure after midnight and noon.
Il est midi.
Il est minuit.
Il est cinq heures.
To talk about time more after the hour but before half past: After the hour, add: :15et quart :30et demi(e) (Add the –e to demi for all hours except midnight and noon) Any other number, add just the number: :10dix :22vingt-deux
To talk about time from half-past to the next hour: use the word moins to subtract the number of the minutes from the hour it is going to be :45 moins le quart for any other time, just subtract the number of minutes 3:37quatre heures moins vingt-trois 2:55trois heures moins cinq
