Marcus Garvey By: Chris Kress & Robert Pistella

Life/Death Born in St. Ann's Bay, Jamaica, on August 17 th, Died in London on June 10 th, 1940.

Marcus was the youngest of a large family. He graduated from the Church of England High School. When he was 14 he was forced out of school because of family money problems. He worked with his Godfather and learned the printing trade..

He had access to a library and picked up writing techniques. When he was 17 moved to Kingston to work for an Uncle from his mother’s side. He became a pro at printing so he got a job working for P.A. Benjamin Company. Back home in Jamaica on Aug. 1, 1914, Garvey started the Universal Negro Improvement Association U.N.I.A. Then he made the black star line. It was shipping company between America and Africa.
