Introduction Body Conclusion Introduction

How to write a paragraph A paragraph in an essay consists of: 1) Topic sentence (states main idea) 2) Explanation (elaborates on main idea) 3) Examples (specific) 4) Linking sentence - linking back to the question

Example of a paragraph in the body of an essay One of the most effective techniques in Mandela’s speech is the use of inclusive words. Inclusive words are used by speech writers because they are designed to make the reader feel as one with the whole group. Inclusive words can also make you feel guilty if you are not participating with everyone else. Mandela uses words such as ‘we’, ‘all of us united’ and ‘together’ repeated throughout so as to try to get the African people to feel like it’s their duty to respond to what he is saying. Therefore, Mandela is able to position his audience into feeling nationalistic about Africa by the repetitive use of inclusive language. Topic sentence Elaborating on topic sentence Examples Linking sentence

Topic Sentence: Tells the reader what the paragraph will be about. Explanation/Expansion sentences: Support or prove the main idea stated in the topic sentence. All the sentences must be about one main idea. Only use relevant material – don’t go off track! How to write a paragraph

INTRODUCTION All Introductions must have the following: 1.General statement about the topic 2.A thesis 3.Outline of what you will discuss

INTRODUCTION Nelson Mandela’s speech, as the President of South Africa delivered in Pretoria, is considered one of the most memorable speeches in modern times. Mandela’s biggest task was to unite South Africa after many years of civil disturbance and violence. He does this through this very powerful speech. He positions his audience to believe that unity is achievable through incorporating persuasive techniques such as emotive and inclusive language, repetition, parallelism and groups of three.
