COLE PARENT TEACHER TEAMS Mrs. LeGrand’s Reading Class

ICE BREAKER Let’s get to know each other better! The Yarn Game: Catch the yarn. Hold a piece of yarn in your hand. Share about something that you like to do with your child. Toss the yarn to someone else in the circle while holding on to your piece of yarn.

AGENDA  Foundational skill  How your child is doing  What to do at home  Setting a Family Goal

FOUNDATIONAL SKILL  This is a skill that students must have in order to be successful  Our first focus is on sight words  Sight words are words that students need to know within 3 seconds or less.

220

WHAT TO DO AT HOME  Sight Word Flash Cards  Teacher Example  If your child has already mastered all 220 sight words, read books with them each day so that they can take Accelerated Reader Tests and earn points  How Accelerated Reader Works  Example: Honey for Baby Bear  _bear.html _bear.html

FAMILY GOAL – WHAT IS IT?  A goal you set for your child based on where they are now, and where you want them to be by January 7 th, when we return to school.  Examples:  My child and I will work on sight word flash cards 5 times a week for 10 minutes each after dinner.  My child will work on sight words with her older brother for 5 times a week for 10 minutes at home after school.  I will read 3 books with my child each week and he will take and pass 3 tests a week.

FAMILY GOAL  Suggestions:  Make the goal specific, and something that you can do at the same time and place each day.  Celebrate the fact that you and your child are practicing together. They can receive stickers for practicing or learning new words.  Now make one for your family  Write the goal twice so the teacher can have a copy

THANK YOU!  Thank you for coming tonight! I look forward to seeing you and answering any other questions you have on next Friday, November 1st on Parent Teacher Conference Day.
