SHARED PARAGRAPH Priestley uses the character of Birling to criticise the views of the upper middle class and the ideas that they had about their role and responsibility in society. Birling’s assertion just before the arrival of the Inspector that a ‘man has to look after himself and his own’ highlights the selfish idea that one is only responsible for one’s self and his own interests which is exactly the idea that Priestley is overtly critical of.
