Uncertainty Reduction Theory Berger (1979)

Assumptions to URD We don’t like uncertainty We want to predict behavior We are motivated to seek information Key to developing relationships Situation dictates level of interest (interviews, first meetings)

Uncertainty Reduction Theory As uncertainty is eliminated, questioning / strategies decline intimacy increases after uncertainty reduction Liking related to URD

3 stages of Initial Interactions 1. Entry Phase -physical appearance cues -controlled by comm rules and norms 2. Personal Phase -more free comm -attitudes, beliefs, values shared 3. Exit Phase -future interaction decided -relationship negotiation

What motivates us to gain knowledge of others? Incentive - who can provide rewards? High incentive value Unpredictable behavior ulterior motives Interaction in the future more self-disclosure (stranger on plane scenario) more favorable impression
