Old Regime: The social and political system of France- the people of France were divided into 3 social classes known as estates Louis XVI: king of France from 1774 to 1792 his failure to grant reforms led to the French Revolution. He was married to Marie Antoinette Estates-General: Legislative assembly of France composed of clergy, nobles, and commoners (all 3 estates) Absolutism: ruler of a country has all the power Divine Right: belief that the king gets his power from God Clergy: Church officials Bourgeoisie: middle class, or working-class people

France was ruled by absolutism- the monarch had absolute control – The monarch ruled by divine right, meaning that power was given by God. Questioning the monarchy = questioning God.
