3  Why was the government out of money?  Fancy living and too many wars  How long had it been since the Estates-General had met?  175 years  What did King Louis XVI want the Estates- General to do?  He wanted the Estates-General to grant him more money in new taxes  Who was in the First Estate?  Wealthy clergy

4  Who was in the Second Estate?  Nobles  Who was in the Third Estate?  Everybody else  How many votes did each estate get?  One  What percent of the population was in the Third Estate?  About 98%

5  What did the Third Estate declare to be?  The National Assembly of France  What did the National Assembly promise with the Tennis Court Oath?  That they would give France a constitution

6  What day did the French people attack the Bastille?  July 14, 1789  Why did they attack the Bastille?  It was a symbol of the king’s unjust powers. They thought there were a lot of prisoners in there that needed freed.  What happened to the governor of the prison?  He was murdered and they carried his head on a stick.  Where was the king on the day of the storming of the Bastille?  He had been hunting by his palace at Versailles

7  As peasants started to rebel, what did many nobles do?  Many nobles fled the country. They were known as emigres.  Did the National Assembly write a constitution, like they had promised?  Yes. This turned France into a constitutional monarchy.  What was the Declaration of the Rights of Man based on?  The English Bill of Rights and the American Declaration of Independence.

8  Why would other countries be worried about what was happening in France?  That ideas of revolution would spread to their lands  What did other rulers do?  The rulers of Austria and Prussia sent armies into France to try to crush the Revolution  When Louis XVI is forced off the throne, a new republic was established. What was the name of the new lawmaking body?  National Convention

9  What happened to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette?  They were executed with the guillotine  Who was attacked during the Reign of Terror?  Anyone suspected of being against the Republic  What was the guillotine?  A machine for cutting heads off quickly  Who was the violent leader of the Reign of Terror?  Robespierre  What happened to Robespierre?  He lost his own head to the guillotine
