Description
Social Inequality
The Third Estate (97% population) was
made up of the bourgeoisie, city workers, and peasants.
Taxes
The First Estate (clergy) and the
Second Estate (nobles) paid little
taxes.
The middle class citizens and poor
peasants of the 3rd Estate paid all of the taxes in France.

4. Enlightenment
The Enlightenment principles of freedom and equality encouraged members of the 3rd Estate to challenge the absolute rule of King Louis XVI.

Absolute ruler King Louis XVI denied most of the people in France of their natural rights.
Famine
In 1789, a terrible famine occurred in France.
