There are 5 main tribes. Navajo, Apache, and Pueblo, Hopi, Zuni. They are each very big tribes. Each one of the tribes are very important to the people. They are one of the groups that make pottery. They do not have plenty of rain, so they use irrigation to water there crops. Social Studies pg

The Navajo are the people who live in Hogan. They live in Summer and Winter Hogan. They use rabbit skin and yucca plants to make clothes. They hunted rabbit, gophers, squirrels, deer, antelope, mountain lions, prairie dogs, and sheep. They grew beans, squash, and many different types of corn.

They made mountain homes for there gods who ruled the universe. They also sand painted for medicine. There tools were weapons to protect them. They weaved and made pottery for there culture.

The Apache lived in wickups for homes. Long ago the wore clothing made from deer skin, but then after time passed they wore Mexican style clothing made mostly from cotton. The Apache never farmed. They gathered food but didn’t grow it back. The Apache did not touch any of the animals in the water. However, they spend most of there time hunting animals like deer, antelopes, elk, and sometimes buffaloes.

They still hunt other animals like prairie dogs, squirrels, and rabbits. They believed that everything in nature had magic powers. They made great baskets for their religion.

The pueblos wove cotton and wool and some buckskin for clothes. They lived in giant pueblos inside and outside of the mountains. They were desert farmers and hunters. They were mainly vegetarian, but when meat was around they would eat it. They hunted for small animals like rabbits, gophers, and squirrels. They also hunted larger animals like deer, antelope, and mountain lions. They mainly ate corn, but they grew squash, and beans. There tools were grinning stones. They made beautiful kachina dolls and pottery.

The Hopi was one of the oldest Indian tribes in the Southwest. They started living of in northeast part of modern day Arizona in the They were known as one of the several tribes called the Pueblo because of there large houses. They grew yellow, blue, red, white, and purple corn. They grew so much corn, that it would last enough to last a whole year. They made many containers so there food and water won’t go bad.

they made traditional ceremonies and potlatches for worship and good luck. For example, the bean dance was a prayer for good harvest. The Hopi today still do many ceremonies, potlatches, and share many traditions they did many years ago. Social Studies pg

The Zuni men did not were much clothing originally, just breeches. The women wore knee length cotton dress called mantas, which was fastened at her right shoulder. They both wore deer skin moccasins, but for special occasions women painted their moccasins white and wrapped white strips of deer skin called puttee around their shins.

Zunis did not paint their faces are bodies except for religious ceremonies. They were famous for their beautiful silver and turquoise jewelry they made. One Zuni word is Keshi (which means hello). Poster
