2 Location The Navajo lived in the southwest. Today the states are Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah. The name “Navajo” comes from the word the “People.” The Navajo and Apache are closely related. The Navajo language is so difficult to learn that it was used as a secret code in World War II.

4 Shelter – Hogan The Navajo lived in a Hogan
Shelter – Hogan The Navajo lived in a Hogan. A Hogan is a domed shape house with a wood frame and walls made out of clay. The door of the Hogan always faces east to see the sun rise.

8 Clothing The Navajo wore clothing made from yucca plants and deerskin. Later, sheep’s wool was woven into clothes. Their shoes were soft leather moccasins.

9 Food The Navajo were farmers who grew the 3 main crops that many Native Americans grew. Corn – Beans – Squash. The Navajo farmed sheep and goats. They hunted deer and rabbits.

10 Customs-Traditions The Navajo are known for their woven rugs and blankets out of sheep wool. They are also known for their jewelry.
