Areas of hardware R & D Effort ~ present R&D Strip Detector o Sensor R&D, ASIC set, hybrid & module assembly o Serial & parallel powering schemes o Optical fibre qualification & DAT schemes o Stave core & tape development, module to stave assembly o Cooling tube & welding methodology o Macro-mechanical supports, stave handling and insertion o Service modules o DAQ, EoS, prototyping & testing of stave o Irradiation studies on many items  UK groups work in cross-institute teams – six hardware workpackages  In collaboration with Colleagues from other countries Pixel Detector – several items in common with strips, not duplicated o Quad Sensor R&D, bumping, tape & module assembly o Layout, support ring design, tapes o Macro mechanics & module to stave assembly o DAQ, prototyping & testing o 3-D & diamond R&D Oxford Group Meeting3

Scope of UK Work  Possible Construction Phase Participation based on o Interests and heritage of Institutions o Funding Level request being developed with funding agency o Evaluation of costs of producing items, including  Prototyping, current designs, expected yields  Working allowance (contingency) & Cost uncertainty  Required staffing levels  Also plan to help with Installation & Commissioning o Not discussed further here  Expect to work on software and performance studies o Software/performance/radiation – Long term Effort level not explored o Significant current work with organised programme  Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Lancaster, UCL, RAL o Not discussed further here Scope 1/2 Oxford Group Meeting4

 Strip Detector o Provide 128 short strip and 108 long strip assembled and tested barrel strip staves.  This is half the barrel strip project.  Corresponds to 3328 SS & 2808 LS modules (  =6136 ) o Provide mechanical supports and service modules for these staves  Support modules are an integrated block of services  Includes cooling pipes, optical fibres, power cables o Provide read-out, powering and DAQ for these staves (half the total).  Pixel Detector o Provide assembled pixel endcap system, ready for installation  Assumes the 5,8,12 layout  Corresponds to 1250 modules, 25 rings o Provide the DAQ and services associated with the pixel forward region o Collaborate on production of 3-D pixel modules for inner layer Note: no anticipated involvement in stub cylinder also simulation and performance studies, incl radiation environment o The UK groups  Expect to work with collaborators in the overall project at a level consistent with its core contribution.  Anticipate that plans will evolve in the light of international context and interests, and developments in design. Scope 2/2 Possible Involvement 5
