European Organization for Nuclear Research Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire Update on ATTRACT ERDIT meeting October 7, 2014 Markus Nordberg (CERN)

ATTRACT (Recap): ERIs as Innovation Engines A framework is proposed, ATTRACT (breAkThrough innovaTion pRogrAmme for the deteCtor/infrastructure ecosysTem). It is a co-innovation, collaborative framework in sensor and imaging technologies between industry and research communities beyond particular sectors in which European Research Infrastructures (ERIs) play a crucial role, through bottom-up participation. ATTRACT is a proposition to use ERIs as Innovation Engines as part of Open Science/Open Innovation strategy, in collaborative interaction with European Industry (SMEs). ATTRACT is a framework permitting incorporating also training of the future European detector R&D community. ATTRACT is launched by Aalto University, ESADE and CERN and is open to scientific communities and industry working in the domain of sensor and imaging technologies (and related computing)

Progress with ATTRACT since 2013  ATTRACT was launched in Brussels in March 2014, with a follow-up meeting in June to gain support in industry and in ERIs  First contacts with EC DG-RDT and CONNECT took place during the summer of 2014  So far, feedback has been positive  What has been proposed to EC?  A pilot (“mini-ATTRACT”) call in 2015  What is to be expected?  DG Connect visit at CERN on October 8  Series of EIROforum events in October and November  Public event in Brussels in December/January organized by Science Business  Invitation to start working on a call as part of H2020 (ERDIT welcome to join!) European Organization for Nuclear Research Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire

ATTRACT and ERDIT – Connections?  ATTRACT is a proposed administrative framework, made available for the detector R&D communities, beyond particle physics and CERN  ERDIT is a Technology Platform, promoting to EC the importance to fund radiation sensor and imaging R&D as part of H2020 – but not administrating it (e.g. setting up calls, finding reviewers, reviewing, allocation of funds, reporting use of etc.)  ERDIT could provide input to ATTRACT, if it so wishes, in communicating the needs of the (generic) detector R&D community to EC  Guidance how H2020 calls should be formulated for them to be meaningful for also radiation sensor and imaging development work;  Concrete R&D topics, demonstrating connections with H2020 program goals and demonstrating active, potential industry involvement. For example, drafting 4-6 H2020 project proposals “ready for implementation”, if funding were available. European Organization for Nuclear Research Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire
