Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution By: Steven Levy

Three Types 1.Orthodox Hackers – Started in the Tech Model Railroad Club at MIT 2.Hardware Hackers – Started with the Homebrew Computer club founded by Fred Moore and Gordon French 3.Game Hackers – Ken and Roberta Williams formed Sierra online one of the first computer gaming companies

Orthodox Hackers Formed Hacker Ethic 1.Access to computers should be unlimited and total 2.Always yield to the hands on imperative 3.All information should be free 4.Mistrust authority, promote decentralization 5.Hackers should be judged by their hacking, not on degrees race or opinion 6.You can create art and beauty on a computer 7.Computers can change your life for the better

Hardware Hackers Developed the Basic language created by Bill Gates and Paul Allen founders of Microsoft It was stolen and copied then came the first time that it was actually called theft to use another’s program without asking Steve Wozniak made a computer from the MOS Technology 6502 microprocessor and then marketed it with Steve Jobs to form the Apple Company

Game Hackers Gaming companies started to open Computers became so cheap high school kids could afford them Computers were bought for hacking and the software was bought at stores instead This is the point when software became more about marketing and companies started using copy prevention mechanisms so people had to start making software cracks to use this software.
