Reading Corner in the classroom

Reading handbook

We’re having fun in English reading ! What about you?

Let’s exchange our opinions about the novels! Will you join us?

Don’t disturb us. We’re reading!

After supper, let’s relax ourselves, reading English novels together!

Tasks: 1. Make a review of the novel you've read. 2. Act out one scene you're most interested in. 3. Present the classic sentences you've chosen from the novel and tell why. 4. Solve the puzzle(s) you've raised that you came across when reading.

Setting : _____________________ Main character: _______________ Plot: ________________________ _____________________________ Theme : _____________________ Your opinion:___________________

Make a review of the novel or you can choose a classic scene or sentence to share with. ---Show time!

Common puzzles: 1. It’s a novel. How can we understand the characters created by the novelist? How can we get to know what the novelist wants to convey? 2. We don’t have a large vocabulary, so how can we understand the novel?

Advice 1.What preparations to make? Get some basic information about the novelist: his background, writing style, other masterpieces, social setting, other people’s comments on his works, etc.

2.How to deal with the new words? ① Overcome your worries about coming across new words. ② You’re advised not to refer to your dictionary every time you come across new words when reading. Try to develop your ability of guessing the words according to the context. Or you may circle them. If a word appears many times in the novel, after reading, look them up in the dictionary and write down on a notebook. In your spare time, review them.

1. Form a good habit of reading. You may set reading aims for yourselves. 2. Pay attention to your speed. Don’t focus too much on the grammar. You needn’t analyze the structure of every sentence. You may as well centre on the situation and cultural differences it conveys. 3. Write regular book reviews. Keep a record of what you think and feel in the process. More Advice

Take out your reading handbook. You may write down something useful you have learned today helpful to your English reading.

Books are the stepping stones to human progress. ---Gorky 书籍是人类进步的阶梯。 --- 高尔基
