Residence Hall Recycling Program Prepared By: Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research

Where We Stand… 1655 tons of waste sent to landfill each year from NAU 960 tons of that waste is recyclable 58% of NAU’s waste at the landfill is recyclable

Recycling Efficiency vs. New Production

Recycling: Impact Reduction Recycling is as much as 95% more energy efficient than new production Our Landfills are rapidly becoming full – Recycling reduces the amount of material in landfills Less Energy Use = Lower Carbon Emissions Reducing NAU’s contribution to global warming We can easily fix this problem …how??

Recycling is Easy Almost all your trash is recyclable! Put it in the right can. Put it in the right dumpster. Point it out when you see someone doing it wrong.

In Your Dorm Room There is a recycling can and a trash can in each dorm room –Recycling can is marked with the recycling symbol and lists all the materials which can be recycled

What gets recycled? Cardboard (break down your boxes!) Paperboard (cereal boxes, etc.) Aluminum Cans (empty, of course) Paper: (Newspaper, Magazines, Junk mail, writing paper) Plastic (#1 & 2) (empty and remove caps) Steel Cans & other metal No Glass Please!

What kind of bag are you using? For Recyclables… -NO BAG IS BEST! makes it easier for workers to sort through -PLEASE, NO COLORED BAGS! workers at the recycling center won’t even open a colored bag due to safety hazards

What Goes in the Trash? Food waste Anything Wet or Nasty

What’s Next? Two Dumpster System –Brown Dumpsters TRASH ONLY!! Everything in these dumpsters is taken directly to the landfill –Green Dumpsters RECYCLABLES ONLY!! Everything in these dumpsters is taken to the recycling center and sorted out

GLASS RECYCLNG Due to safety hazards GLASS CANNOT BE INCLUDED IN RECYCLING CONTAINERS *Remember* Workers will be sorting recyclables by hand Glass can be recycled in the parking lot outside of Mountain View

Recycling Bin Locations = Green Dumpster

What’s the goal again? Reduce recyclables being sent to landfill 58% of materials sent to landfill by NAU are recyclable –Takes up more space in landfill –Uses more energy due to production of new goods –Recycling is as much as 95% more efficient than producing new material

Solutions… Everyone needs to help out by recycling It’s easy! Don’t be afraid to point it out to other people –If someone’s misusing the bins…tell them!! We need to work together REMEMBER GREEN BIN: Recycling BROWN BIN: Trash

Questions If you have questions… –Just read the side of the recycling can in your room….it explains everything –Call The Merriam-Powell Center for Environmental Research
