3 How Recycling Benefits You Uses less landfill space Keeps trash disposal costs down Uses less energy and materials Reduces the cost of products & utilities Recycling an aluminum can saves as much energy as a can full of gasoline. Reduces pollution

4 Not Just A Good Idea State Mandate –Mandatory Waste Reduction Goals Can only be met via recycling Report sent to the State in Spring 2015 –All other Illinois state universities have recycling programs UIC, UIUC, GSU, NIU, WIU, SIU, EIU, etc. CSU formerly had a recycling program This new program is designed to last

5 Basics of Recycling Single Stream Recycling Dumpsters –All recyclables go in the green dumpster –Trash goes in the other dumpster Use Clear or Blue Bags –No Black Bags! Change bags only when necessary

6 What can be recycled? Paper / Cardboard Bond Paper (White & Colored) Computer Paper Calculator Tape Computer Paper Envelopes Junk Mail Legal Pad Paper Letterhead Magazines Newspaper Cardboard Containers Aluminum Cans Steel Cans Plastic Soup Container Bi-Metal Cans Water/Soda/Juice Bottles Detergent Bottles Microwave Trays Milk Jugs Plastics #1-#5 and #7

7 What goes in the trash? When in doubt, throw it out Food or Beverage Waste Candy & Chip Wrappers Rubber Bands Non-Paper Packing Material Plastic strapping Stickers/ Labels Tissue Products Plastic Grocery Bags Styrofoam Paper coffee cups & lids Plastic # 6

8 Current Recycling Residence Hall Recycling –No changes, same green dumpsters Shredded Paper –Use clear plastic bags and green dumpsters Cardboard Boxes –Break down or crush the boxes to fit them into the green dumpsters Keep up the good work!

9 New Safety Box Cutters Each BSW can get one box cutter –Voluntary –Auto-retracting –Uses special safety blades – no points Blade can be flipped when it becomes dull See your foreman for new blades

10 New Recycling Plan - Deskside Not Your Responsibility –Voluntary program –Office workers will empty green bins into hallway recycling containers Green bins for recycling only –Do not put black bags in these bins –Do not collect trash from green bins

11 New Recycling Plan – Hallways / Open Areas ClearStream Containers –Wire-frame & Plastic Different tops for bottles & cans or for paper –Special clear bags Instructions right on the bag –Remove Plastic Top –Remove and tie up old bag –Loop new bag through the frame & over corners, then pull tight –Replace Plastic Top

13 New Recycling Plan – Hallways / Open Areas Empty Only When Needed –Check Containers Daily Take out bags of paper when they are ½ – ¾ full –Bags may be heavy Take out bags of bottles & cans when necessary –Getting close to full –Liquid in bottom of the bag –Odors from the bag –Use your judgment

14 New Recycling Plan – Green Carts Carts are available –Basement / 1 st floor –Most buildings Use if needed –Not required –Only for recycling

15 New Recycling Plan - Dumpsters Two Dumpsters Green for Recycling –Bags of recyclables –Boxes –Shredded Paper Blue/Other colors for Normal Trash

16 Review Recycling is a State Mandate Collect recyclables from hallway containers –Also boxes and shredded paper –Paper, cardboard, bottles, and cans Use Clear Recycling Bags Bring Recyclables to the Green Dumpster
