Presentation on theme: "SLIDE 1: Introduce Yourself"— Presentation transcript:

1 SLIDE 1: Introduce Yourself My name is__________________________ or We are __________________________. We are the School Team and we are here to teach you everything you need to know about recycling at school. Our school, along with 9 other schools are taking part in this exciting recycling program! We can now recycle paper and containers in addition to the beverage containers we’ve always been recycling. It’s up to each of us to properly recycle all that we can to make this program a success!

2 RECYCLING Have you seen our new bins? SLIDE 2:
Have you seen the new recycling bins around school (point to bins that you have set up at the front of the room)? You will see these in the hallways and the cafeteria. There is a bin for: Beverage Containers (point to green beverage container bin) Containers (point to blue container bin) Paper (point to grey paper bin) There is a small GREY bin in your classroom which is for paper (point to small grey paper bin).

3 GREEN Beverage containers go in the bin. SLIDE 3:
Let’s start with BEVERAGE CONTAINERS! Beverage containers include the drink containers that our school has always recycled. When you recycle your beverage containers, our school receives money that can be put back into environmental initiatives at the school. Here are the beverage containers we can recycle at school: drink pouches, juice boxes, water bottles, pop bottles, aluminum cans and juice bottles (show each item as you read them out loud). Before you put them in the beverage container bin, remember: Remove the straw; it belongs in the garbage bin (take the straw out of container). Remove the bottle cap; bottle caps belong in the garbage bin (remove cap from bottle). Make sure it is empty. Pour liquid down the sink (empty any leftover liquid). All these containers are now ready to go in the GREEN beverage container recycling bin (point to green beverage container bin).

4 BLUE Food containers go in the bin SLIDE 4:
Let’s learn about MIXED CONTAINERS! (Point to blue container bin) Now, we can recycle more types of food containers. Some of the containers we can recycle are: milk cartons, yogurt containers, tin cans and lunch mates’ containers (show each item as you read them out loud). If you are not sure, look for a recycling symbol with the numbers 1-7 on it. If there is a number, you can put it in the BLUE container recycling bin. If you cannot find a number, it must go in the garbage bin (show students the bottom of a container with the recycling symbol and number). Before you put things in the container recycling bin, remember to: Empty leftover food into the garbage. Remove covers from containers. Put glass in the garbage bin.

5 BLUE Remember MILK CARTONS go in the bin with Mixed Containers
SLIDE 5: Remember, milk containers DO NOT belong in the BEVERAGE RECYCLING bin. Milk Cartons go in the CONTAINER recycling bin. Before you put milk containers in the BLUE container bin: Empty any leftover milk. All milk containers have to be emptied before they can go in the container recycling bin.

6 GREY Paper goes in the bin SLIDE 6:
We can now recycle paper at school. There is a lot of paper and cardboard used at school. It can now go in the GREY paper recycling bin (point to grey paper bin). Some examples of paper and cardboard are: newspapers, exercise books, loose leaf, construction paper, magazines and lunch mate cardboard covers (show each item as you read them out loud). Some paper still needs to go in the garbage: paper cups, paper plates, paper napkins or tissues and paper towels (show each item as you read them out loud). You can also put paper in the small GREY paper recycling bin in your classroom and in the large paper bins in the computer room (show students small grey paper bin). Even though we can recycle, it’s still important to reduce paper consumption. Make sure you print only what you need – don’t print your first 12 drafts. Print double-sided. Edit on screen. Reuse one-side-still-blank paper for notes and calculations.

7 still go in the GARBAGE Some things SLIDE 7:
The new recycling program is great, but there are some things that just can’t be recycled. Here are some things that still need to go in the garbage bin: Styrofoam, glass jars, plastic bags, straws, bottle caps, plastic wrap, chip bags and other snack bags, paper plates, paper cups and paper napkins, foil, plastic forks and spoons and coffee cups (show each item as you read them out loud). A great way to cut down on this waste it to pack a waste-free lunch. Use a reusable water bottle, lunch bag, cutlery and food containers.

8 SLIDE 8: Let’s review! Before you put something in the recycling bin, remember: Scrape leftover food into the garbage. Empty leftover liquid into a sink or sop bucket. Remove bottle caps, straws and lids. They must go in the garbage. Make sure you put your waste in the right bin. If you are not sure, ask a teacher or a School team member for help. Remember, you can also check the recycling poster in your classroom.

9 Send less waste to landfills Protect our environment
Why we should recycle: Send less waste to landfills Protect our environment Be a role model for other schools SLIDE 9: Insert School Name is lucky to be part of the School program. It’s up to us to help our school and the environment by recycling more!  The School program is important. Our school will send less garbage to landfills. This helps protect our environment that provides us with all the things we use everyday. Be a role model for other schools who will learn from our program. Let’s do our best! We can recycle more!

10 SLIDE 11: Thank you for listening to our presentation. Are there any questions?
