A Fighter for Human Rights in china

Liu Xiaobo December 28 th, 1955 Born in Changchun, Jilin, China Chinese literary critic, professor, writer, human right activist. He called for political reforms and the end of communism in China. He won the Nobel Peace Prize on October 8 th, 2010

+ Criticism of the Choice: Dialogues with Li Zehou + Aesthetic and Human Freedom + The Fog of Metaphysics + All of his books were banned in Chinese mainland. + He later on published five books in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

+ Liu returned China in 1989 to support the pro-democracy movement when Tiananmen Square protest broke out. + He staged a hunger strike to gain the trust from the students. + The Chinese army quickly enforced Martial Law and started to clear the square. + Liu and his colleagues successfully negotiated with the student leader and army commander. + Thousands of students were able to withdraw the square safely.

From Jan 1989 to 1991, he was arrested in Qincheng Prison. From May, 1995 to Jan, 1996, he was charged for being involve in the student protest in From Oct 1996 to Oct 1999, he was charged for disturbing the social order. He also married Liu Xia in He is now serving 11 years sentence in Jinzhou Prison, which is located in the western China, and he was deprived all of political rights for 2 years.

Liu did not stop his struggle for freedom of China He published Charter 08 on Dec 10 th, 2008 Charter 08 called for more freedom of expression, human rights, democratic elections, and economic liberalism. The release date of Charter 08 coincide with the 60 th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It appeared on the internet shortly before it was pulled by the censor. It gained 10,000 signatures.

Liu was taken into custody two days after the release of Charter 08 He was tried in Beijing No.1 Intermediate Court on Dec 23 rd, His wife was not able to observe the hearing. The foreign diplomats were denied the access to the court. Liu was sentenced 11 years of prison and two years of deprivation of political rights by Beijing No.2 Intermediate Court by the charge of “ inciting subversion of state power” on Dec 25 th, 2009

“ I have no enemies, and no hatred. None of the police who have monitored, arrested and interrogated me, the prosecutors who prosecuted me, or the judges who sentence me, are my enemies. While I’m unable to accept your surveillance, arrest, prosecution or sentencing, I respect your professions and personalities, including Zhang Rongge and Pan Xueqing who act for the prosecution at present. I was aware of your respect and sincerity in your interrogation of me on December 3. For hatred is corrosive of a person’s wisdom and conscience; the mentality of enmity can poison a nation’s spirit, instigate brutal life and death struggles, destroy a society’s tolerance and humanity, and block a nation’s progress to freedom and democracy. I hope therefore to be able to transcend my personal vicissitudes in understanding the development of the state and changes in society, to counter the hostility of the regime with the best of intentions, and defuse hate with love.... I do not feel guilty for following my constitutional right to freedom of expression, for fulfilling my social responsibility as a Chinese citizen. Even if accused of it, I would have no complaints. ” —Liu Xiaobo, 23 December 2009

Liu has been harassed and detained repeatedly since 1989, when he stepped into the drama playing out on Tiananmen Square. In 2006, after being held for more than a year in secret detention, he officially was charged by the government. As Liu in the prison, his wife, Liu Xia is placed under house arrest and is forbidden to talk to any reporters even though she has not been charged with any crime. But she is not afraid of there things, because she believes his husband’s contribution to human rights will one day by recognized by a wider audience.

1. On Dec 11, 2008, the U.S. Department of State called for Liu’s release. 2. On Dec 22 nd, 2008, 300 international writers requested for Liu’s release. 3. In Dec, 2009, the European Union and the U.S. issued formal appeals for unconditional release of Liu Xioabo. 4. The Republic of China President Ma Ying-Jeou called Beijing to tolerate dissent. 5. Jan 18 th, 2010, Liu was given the award of Nobel Peace Prize. 6. By 2011, the appeal “ Freedom for Liu Xiaobo” is supported by 700 writers around the world.

On October 8 th, 2010, the Nobel Committee awarded Liu Xiaobo Nobel Peace Prize. However, he was not able to receive his prize because he was still in the prison in China Liu is the first Chinese citizen to win the Nobel Prize He is also the third person to have received the prize while still in the prison.

China blocked foreign news broadcasters. The celebrations for Liu Xiaobo were stopped and curtailed. Many dissidents were put either detained or put under surveillance. China declined to attend Nobel Prize Ceremony. Other fifteen countries also refused to attend, such as Russia, Egypt, Tunisia.

China is one of the biggest countries in the world. Also, it is now the second economic body in the world. However, The Chinese citizens’ human rights are strictly limited by the government. More and more countries in the world start to criticize for Chinese government’s violation on its protestors and prisoners. We believe that China will become democracy one day in the future.
