The Nuts and Bolts of Chemistry Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

Atoms: Basic and smallest particle of all elements

Elements: Pure substance Made of only one type of atom Cannot be broken down into smaller pieces 100+ elements in periodic table Example: oxygen, carbon, aluminum

Compounds: Pure substance Made of two or more different types of elements that are chemically combined Always follows a specific ratio Example: water (H 2 O), carbon dioxide (CO 2 )

Mixture: A combination of two or more substances mixed together (not chemically combined) Can include elements, compounds, or both Can be separated by physical changes (filtering, evaporation, etc.) Parts of a mixture keep their own properties Example: salad, air, ocean water, sand
