OEA’s Role in Shingle Recycling Manufactured Asphalt Shingle Scrap Tear-Off Asphalt Shingle Scrap

Second Asphalt Shingle Recycling Forum The Forum was held April 13, 2003 Sponsored by: Mn/DOT MOEA Funded in Part by: Recycled Materials Resource Center (RMRC) Website: The Forum was held April 13, 2003 Sponsored by: Mn/DOT MOEA Funded in Part by: Recycled Materials Resource Center (RMRC) Website:

Second Asphalt Shingle Recycling Forum Identified opportunities and barriers Proposed National ASSHTO Shingle Specification Expanded the network of professionals

Second Asphalt Shingle Recycling Forum (continued) Identified, reviewed and discussed the latest research Discussed key issues and next steps

Shingle Scrap Characteristics in Minnesota Manufactured Scrap 40,000 to 50,000 tons per year from manufacturers Three manufacturing plants 20% to 40% recycled in 2003 Tear-Off Scrap 400,000 tons per year of tear-off (post consumer) From re-roofing projects (hundreds of contractors) Currently 100% Landfilled

Three Asphalt Shingle Manufacturers in Minnesota: CertainTeed (Shakopee) GAF (Minneapolis) Owens Corning (Minneapolis)

Three Shingle Recyclers Bituminous Roadways (Inver Grove Heights, MN) Allied Blacktop (Eau Claire, WI) Omann Brothers Paving (St. Michael, MN)

Manufactured Shingle Scrap – Experience To-Date Two of three shingle manufacturers have contracts to manage their shingle waste For more information about availability of ground shingle scrap, contact recyclers Excellent acceptance by Counties, cities, townships and private customers

Key Operational Lessons Learned Savings in virgin asphalt and aggregate costs range between $0.50 to $1 per ton of finished HMA Cost of processing can range from $12 to $15 per ton of whole shingle scrap feedstock Production rate can range from 20 to 30 tons per hour Maintenance (e.g., hard surfacing of grinding surfaces) is critical

Key Operational Issues (cont’d) Airborne dust, fibers and other particles can be managed Ground shingle product may re-agglomerate (especially with organic / felt shingles) Regrinding just before use in HMA plant can help maximize benefit of shingles Oversized product off of screen (1/2-inch plus) can be re-ground or potentially used as is in alternative applications

Alternative End Use Applications Aggregate as base Dust control on existing aggregate surfaced roads Lightweight, cold mix pavement alternatives

Minnesota’s Tear-Off Demonstration Projects RMRC-sponsored air sampling in 2002 Tear-off scrap collection by Sella Roofing Sorting and transfer by Armor Waste Bituminous Roadways installation for City of St. Paul residential paving in 2003
