A Very SERIOUS Video Clip on the Brain Ws_IYhttp:// Ws_IY

“The brain is intimately involved in and connected with everything educators and students do at school. Any disconnect is a recipe for frustration and potential disaster.” Brain-based education is best understood in three words: engagement, strategies, and principles. Eric Jensen

Brain Break Trading Places: Stand up and push in your chairs. If I call out a trait that relates to you then you switch with someone else who shares the same trait.

Worksheets Don’t Grow Dendrites Strategy #1: Brainstorming & Discussion Strategy # 2: Drawing & Artwork Strategy #3: Field Trips Strategy #4: Games Strategy #5: Graphic Organizers, Maps, & Word Webs

Worksheets Don’t Grow Dendrites Strategy #6: Humor Strategy # 7: Manipulatives, Experiments, Labs & Models Strategy #8: Metaphors, Analogies & Similes Strategy #9: Mnemonic Devices Strategy #10: Movement

Strategy # 1 Brainstorming Encourages divergent thinking Students are given questions to which there is one or more appropriate answer. Students brainstorm as many ideas as possible.

Strategy # 2 Drawing & Artwork Pre-assessment tool Review content previously taught Recall the major details of a unit Exit cards - Students draw a picture that depicts their understanding

Brain Break Mingle, Mingle, Group: Stand up and push in your chairs. Walk around the room saying “mingle, mingle, mingle” until you hear me say “Groups of 5”. You quickly gather with four other people to create your group. If you are left standing without a group then you can go back to your seat and sit down.

Strategy # 3 Field Trips Design a virtual field trip around a curricular objective. Design and solve real- world problems in the school environment.

Strategy #4: Games Quizzes/Quizyournoodle-the-brain apter/2/ (Chapter 9 77.)

Strategy #4: Game Ideas Make a concentration game with vocabulary words. Students create a Wheel of Fortune with spelling words Students write their own questions for their Kabob game Give students blank Bingo cards and they write their own vocabulary words…then students read definitions aloud. The first student to cover five words in a row, horizontal or vertically wins!

Brain Break Line Up: Stand up and push in your chair. We are going to create a line in alphabetical order by your first name. Ready…Set…GO!

Strategy # 5 Graphic Organizers, Maps & Word Webs

Strategy #6: Humor

Brain Break Tic Tac Toe: With a partner you will play tic tac toe on one of your papers. See how many you can win in one minute!

Strategy # 7 Manipulatives, Experiments, Labs, & Models Students that have difficulty paying attention in class when a teacher lectures for most of the period. Same student can hyper-focus on a hands on project for hours

Strategy #8: Metaphors, Analogies & Similes This is probdifjdsihdi This is probably the MOST MOST powerful of all the strategies.

Brain Break Six Spots: I will number six spots around the room. You may choose to go to one of the spots. I will roll the die and if your number is rolled then you are out. Ready…Set… GO!

Strategy #9: Mnemonic Devices PEMDAS When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking. My very educated mother just served us nine pizzas…Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and forget about Pluto. Mnema is the Greek root meaning memory.

Strategy # 10 Movement

Closing Thoughts…
