Edmodo Connections! HOW TO USE TECHNOLOGY TO STAY IN TOUCH WITH PARENTS AND STREAMLINE SMALL GROUPS/INDEPENDENT WORK.

Kahoot!  Please go to

What was homework? Is there vocabulary tonight?

I never received the newsletter.

What is Edmodo!  It is like and educational version Facebook.  It allows students and teachers to post notes, alerts, and files for class.  It gives the teacher opportunities to alert parents.  Teachers can post directions that the students can check back to whenever needed.  It is a website where “over 45 million teachers, students, and parents are connecting to collaborate on assignments, discovering new resources, and more!” (Information from Edmodo.com).

Parent Accounts: Creation:  Students must log into their account.  At the bottom right hand corner of the student screen there is a parent code.  Then parents log out of the student account and go to the Edmodo log in screen.  There is a create parent account link.  After clicking the link parents should use the code from the student account.

The Parent Letter!

Parent Account What can it do?  The parent account can receive notes, alerts, and files from the teacher.  It can monitor students’ (directly linked to parent account) private messages to the teacher and responses.  It gives parents access to quiz grades given through Edmodo. What can’t it do?  Parents cannot post to any class pages.  Parents cannot directly contact the teacher.  Parents cannot see student posts to class pages  Parents cannot see other students posts except on alerts. (For confidentiality reasons I do not use alerts.) ***By using alerts, parents can see what all students post in reply to an alert!***

How to use the parent accounts to keep communication open.  Use alerts that are only for parent pages.  This is great to alert to up coming tests an quizzes.  Reminders for field trips or special events.  Use notes to send parent page reminders and discuss upcoming lessons.  Post weekly objectives, questions, and homework.  Use file attachments to send homework answers and guides.  Use file attachments to send PDFs of smart board lessons and notes so that parents know exactly how to help with homework (be careful of copyrighted items).

The Weekly Update

Making Independent Work Easy  Edmodo gives teachers the opportunity to post assignments and instructions in an easy to access format.  Teachers can post links to help guide student learning and save time.  Students can reply and ask questions that can later be answered by the teacher.

Independent Work: Links  Use links to reinforce instruction or engage new materials.  When you type your note to the class use the link button to add a link.  This is great for:  Long links  Kahoot and Socrative Quizzes  Khan Academy Videos  More

Independent Work

How to send files to parents Notes and Homework:  First select your class (parents)  Then select note.  Next you want to type the note to send.  Click the file icon to select the file you want to use.  After inserting the file press send. dagobert83

Send alerts! Alert!!!  Sending an alert is just like a note.  You select alert.  Then select who you want to send it to.  If you send alerts to students and they reply to it, all parents can see. This could be a confidentiality issue.  Then press send. es_Warning_Notification.png

Time Release The Clock  Both the notes and alerts can be time released.  Use the little clock icon to set the time you want to note or alert to be sent.  This can be really useful to set up all homework releases for a week. rg1024

Homework Help! Setting Up a Time  Set up a time with students that you will get on and check each evening.  One consistent time works best.  Students need to post to you before that time so that you can reply.  This eliminates the excuse of “I didn’t understand.” by-olku

Homework Help! The App  There is an app for cell phones and tablets.  The app does not ding to alert you.  You must log in to see alerts.  If a student messages you and you have your account set to pre- approval it will not you until you check your app. phone-touchscreen-mobile /
