2 Clean and Renewable Energy There are five main types of energy that can produce mass amounts of electricity for public use: Wind power (clean & renewable) Solar (clean & renewable) Hydroelectric (clean & renewable) Nuclear (clean) Fossil Fuel Power

3 History Was derived from the Greek technique for grinding wheat into flour. (mid 18 th century) Bernard Forest de Belidor began studying hydraulics in his practice as a French Military engineer, hydroelectric power incorporated his techniques The first hydroelectric dam to produce energy was in New York State and the year was 1881.

5 Advantages Pollution and waste is not produced Renewable energy source Clean energy source Reliable energy source Once the dam has been built, it is not expensive to maintain. When the demand decreases or increases the plant production can be adjusted accordingly. Storage of water ensures available generation during peaks.

6 Disadvantages Time consuming and expensive to build Changes of habitat and landscape will occur as well as more land will be submersed The land below is affected due to reduced and regulated water flow Silt can build up in the reservoir because the water flow isn't strong enough or present, residency time is significantly increased due to the dam blocking it.
