Human Systems – Population Patterns Population Density & Distribution

If you had a choice… Where would you like to live?

Why did you choose this place?

There are many things to do in Canada Each region is very unique Fishing Farming/Agriculture Fishing Mining Mining for Fuel – Gas & Oil Forestry

People choose to live in places for many reasons: Agriculture Natural Resources (forests, fish or minerals) Manufacturing Business Greater Variety of Jobs Cultural Diversity Rural Settlement Urban Settlement

Rural and Urban Settlement Rural Settlement – people settle in areas outside cities and towns.

Rural and Urban Settlement Urban Settlement – people settle in cities. Urbanization – when a rural area is changing and becoming an urban area.

Population Density Population Density –The number of people that live in 1 square kilometer (km 2 ). Southern Ontario This region has a high population density.  A lot of people for 1 km 2. This region as a low population density.  Not too many people for 1 km2. Northern Manitoba

Assignment 1 Population Density Canada Population density is a way of describing how crowded a place is. FORMULA FOR POPULATION DENSITY Population density = number of people living in an area size of area (in km 2 ) Place Population Size of Area (km 2 ) Population Density (people/km 2 ) How crowded? 1 = most 4 = least very isolated place downtow n megacity city suburbs rural
