Physical signs stress 1. Pounding heart 2. Dryness of mouth 3. Raised body temperature 4. Lightheaded, dizziness, or faintness 5. Trembling, shaking hands 6. Speech difficulties 7. Insomnia 8. Grinding of teeth during the night 9. Sweating 10. Frequent urination 11. Upset stomach 12. Loss or increased appetite 13. Increase substance abuse 14. Accident proneness 15. Frequent illness Psychological signs 1. Irritability, tension, or depression 2. Impulsive behavior 3. Emotional instability 4. Lowered self-esteem 5. Reduced communication with others 6. Avoidance of activities 7. Forgetting things 8. Decreased ability to perform tasks 9. Inability to concentrate 10. Nightmares 11. Excessive work; omission of play

Identifying Personal Causes of Stress 1. Life Events: drivers license, graduation, moving, divorce, new baby 2. Physical Stressors: pollution, physical injury, drug use, excessive diet/exercise 3. Daily Hassles: time pressures, too many responsibilities, deadlines, and conflicts

Ways to manage stress 1. Plan ahead 2. Get adequate sleep 3.Get regular physical activity (See pg. 208 for benefits) 4. Eat nutritious foods: poor diet habits can actually be a source of stress by causing fatigue, weakness and reduced ability to concentrate.

Ways to manage stress continued Foods continued - Eat regular meals - Limit comfort foods: loaded with sugars and fats - Limit caffeine: will actually increase the physical effects on the body 5. Avoid tobacco, alcohol & other drugs

Stress management techniques Redirect your energy (work on creative project, exercise, etc) Relax and laugh (deep breathing, thinking pleasant thoughts, stretching, etc) Keep a positive outlook Seek out support Express yourself (learn positive strategies for expressing needs, wants, and feelings. Set goals for you future. See health minute (pg 208)
