Checking Student Work In MS Word How to mark up papers digitally by using MS Word By Thomas Redd

Rationale  Stacks of Papers that need grading  Hard to read handwriting  Clear and complete feedback  Plenty of space available to write feedback  Environmentally friendly—save a tree  Wisely use the technology that we have available  Easily mark and grade quizzes, journals, essays—all written responses

Specifications  Create a way to collect students’ papers electronically  (attachments)  Drop Box  Thumb drives  LAN School (in the Lab)  Microsoft Word  Computers

Open MS Word

Open the Review Toolbar by clicking View

Now click Toolbars

Now click on Reviewing if it does not have a check mark in front of it. If it has a check mark, the toolbar is already installed.

Your computer should now have these tools somewhere at the top.

Know your Markup Tools  Make detail suggestions to students  Show changes you would make  Highlight problems such as spelling  Comments can be toggled on or off  Save comments and return to students

Markup Tools  Choose “Final Showing Markup” in this box to see the comments.  Comments can also be turned off by selecting “Final.”

Marking Students’ Work  You now are ready to mark students’ work

Collecting Documents  Documents can be ed to you  They can be collected in the lab using LAN School  Have students save documents to a thumb drive  This method would be the easiest  I suggest that you have several thumb drives available to be used only to hand in work

Classroom Logistics  Have a thumb drive per row or table  Use a sticky label to identify the drive  Perhaps students’ names on the drives would help  Row number labels may be best  In your H drive, create a folder for students’ work with sub folders for drives  Do what works for you

Load a Document  Open a student document (from the thumb drive, , or LAN School) School)

Select problem spots and click this button to highlight them.

Add comments by clicking this button.
