Major Constraints Cultivation of Pulses in Rice Fallow areas.  Lack of irrigation facility.  Inadequate residual soil moisture under rainfed upland situation.  Stray cattle  Paucity of time for Rabi land preparation after harvest of rice.  Unavailability of suitable variety of late sown condition. Strategies  Thrust on early / mid duration rice varieties under rice based cropping system to ensure timely sowing of rabi crop.  Selection of crop / variety depending upon winter temperature, soil texture and soil availability of soil moisture.  Overnight soaking of seeds and seed treatment.  Growing of rabi crops in compact area involving group of farmers to tackle stray cattle problem. 8
