Donna Page HSD Meeting 23 February 2010

History AHPS Web Pages – Phase V implemented June 2007 Hydrology Program decided to make investment in the Consolidated Internet Farm (CIF) to accelerate the inclusion of the AHPS Web Pages into the CIF in Dec Work began on Phase VI software in Q The hardware was delivered in March/April 2007

Summary of Phase VI Features Migration from region-based web farms to NWS Consolidated Internet Farm (CIF) Use of new data pathways, including National River Location Database (NRLDB) Updated hydrograph image generation program (database driven) Transparent to users - with a few enhancements Precip Page modifications Pacific NW Service Assessment item (multiple data sources at a site) Product segmentation issue (associate proper product with location) Use of Google Maps for gauge site location map TARGET DATE – Mid-March Spring Flooding (Iowa, Red River, West) will begin in March

Key Benefits Redundancy, load balancing – entire nation can be served by one, two or three farms More frequent hydrograph updates Realize enhancements for our customers Works around existing SRH-HQ comms issue Begin addressing requirements backlog – “Phase VII” and beyond CIF soon to be a Certified and Accredited system Lower contractor costs for support and future development Implementation of NetCache servers will decrease load on DB and backend servers, improve download time for users

Key Risks New data pathways and new software Extensive testing required Less than preferred time (or dollars) available Exposure to CIF outages – database, filers, network, etc. Gain CIF support How will the performance change when the CIF is under heavy loads? New, untested 3-tier support paradigm: TOC (Tier 1), CIF – OCWWS/HSD – AHPS Contractor (Tiers 2 and 3) Potential for multiple versions of a hydrograph Original plan – database synchronization – infeasible with MySQL Secondary plan – create all images from one farm and rsync – infeasible due to bandwidth limitations Current plan – create images at each farm and monitor

Intangibles / Other Issues CIF Issues Bandwidth is filling up Can we “reserve” future bandwidth to implement “secondary plan” of rsyncing images? Will CIF be more stable than region farms? Will Phase VI overwhelm the CIF? Will bandwidth issues improve when we deploy Phase VI and stop rsyncing large HydroGen HML files? Governance model under development/review No decision on who will pay for hardware refresh and CIF enhancements, CIF O&M costs, etc. Less work (NRLDB) for HPM’s … or more questions? Training to mitigate Decision to Launch – based on Go-No Go Checklist Spring Floods deadline - benefits vs. risks Other Phase VI preparations – PNS, Training, HydroGen Cron Coordination, Lat-Lon and Flood Stage Discrepancies Current momentum between OHD and OCIO Quickly using up AHPS FY10 funds for support & development

Memorandum of Agreement Defines the responsibilities of each party in support of the AHPS information dissemination. (OCIO, OCWWS, OOS, OHD) Support Structure defined Tier 1 – TOC Tier 2, 3 – CIF, WHFS Support, OHD Support Contractor Tier 2 only - Region Tier 3 only – NCF Tracking of issues through TOC ticket system, others Service Level Agreements for response and notification times. Responses based on Emergency, High, Medium, Low impact designation.

Current Status CIF CR and HQ farms - generating full AHPS web pages on test site SR – delay because of N-CIRT issue and risk to AHPS precip pages. Will come on line shortly after deployment. To be done Setup of ldm feeds of RFC probabilistic graphics and precip Training for TOC and WHFS Support (Feb ) Training for WFOs (Regional reps: 3 sessions to be scheduled) Test of rehost of AHPS Web on 3 rd party web (this week) Send out PNS for new URLs Post deployment Change WFO HydroGen crons
