Perception

is the process by which we filter 1 2 and interpret 3 what our senses tell us, 4 so we can create a 5 meaningful picture of the world. 6767

1.process – a way of doing something 2. filter – filters change what ever goes through them 3. interpret – to apply a personal meaning 4. what our senses tell us – raw data 5. to create – to bring into existence 6. a meaningful picture – it has value 7. of the world – reality

Selecting We select which sensory data we are going to process. Things stand out because they are immediate, relevant or intense Influenced by who we are and what’s going on inside us Expectations

Organizing Then we organize that data by matching it to known patterns. There are 3 basic patterns Stereotypes – based on societal ideas Personal Constructs – judgment or evaluation based on personal experience Scripts – guides to action based on past experience

Interpreting Finally, we interpret what the data means This is always a subjective process of explaining our perceptions. Attributes our explanation of why things happen or people behave the way they do

Influences on Perception Physical differences Culture Social Roles

Improving Perception Realize perceptions are subjective Avoid mindreading – don’t assume you know what the other person means Check your perceptions with others
