KU MRI What is the MRI? What is KU doing? Firmware/testboards Optical hybrids Sensors

What is the MRI? Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) –$1.7M grant from the NSF –April 15, 2010 – April 14, 2013 –KU lead with KSU, UNL, UIC, UPRM, Rice, Rutgers Goal is to build a full readout sector for the Phase I upgraded silicon pixel detector –LHC and CMS are defining plans –CMS is writing a Conceptual Design Report Has more than pixels in it Due Sept, 2010 to funding agencies Pixel upgrade needed around 2015 –Less material –Less Deadtime –Sensor radiation damage –HLT Trigger and pattern recognition

Baseline design Keep design as similar as possible but add new features. 4 layers, 3 disks each end –More module fabrication (Purdue/UNL) –Improved testing and bump bonding work (UIC) Ultra-low mass mechanics with carbon fibers and CO 2 cooling –Twisted pair cables (UPRM/PSI) 320 Mbit/s Digital readout (instead of the present 40 MHz analog) –Need new ROC (PSI) –New TBM (Rutgers/KSU) –New optical hybrid (CERN/KU) –New boards for FEDs (Vienna) –Test full chain (Rice) New improved sensors? –KU/UPRM/PSI –Radiation testing (Rice/UPRM/KU) Barrel End caps

What is KU doing – Firmware/Testboards  Make sure testboards are functional with module test systems and documentation is clear Firmware: –Module emulator Needed to test downstream electronics as new ROC won’t be ready for another year –Services to support running Optical Hybrid

What is KU doing? – Optical Hybrid Get needed equipment to read out optical fibers using an Oscilloscope: –2 Optical Scope probes such as TEK 6700 –Fiber testing kit –Visual fault locator Help CMS buy needed parts: –Zarlink receivers for FED boards –FPGAs to make new FEDs Setup a teststand that can test fibers Make a teststand that can run the optical hybrid –Use testboard with I 2 C firmware –Get AOH boards from Vienna First digital optical hybrid prototype expected Dec, 2010

What is KU doing? – Sensors Study of efficiency with PIRE is necessary New set of sensors ordered from Hamamatsu –Work with PSI on tests in Switzerland –Not as useful for us as they are one sided and p on n –Study HV breakdown –Maybe another radiation/testbeam run Another set of sensors and tests?
