North Carolina Lighthouses

Cape Hatteras Light house Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the U.S. at 198 feet. It was built in 1803, but completed in The “candy stripe” pattern was added in 1873 to make it stand out in the daytime. It was moved 2900 feet in 1999 because of erosion.

Ocracoke Lighthouse Was built in 1823 and is the oldest NC lighthouse still in use. Standing only 65 feet tall, it is the shortest NC lighthouse. It was Built on the site of a Native American village. The current beacon Can be seen 14 miles out to sea. »

Bodie Island Lighthouse Bodie Island lighthouse was built in It stands 156 feet tall. Folklore teaches that that “Body” Island got its name from the many shipwrecks that would leave bodies on the shore. Its beacon shines 19 miles to the sea. Each stripe is 22 feet tall.

Oak Island Lighthouse Oak Island lighthouse is the newest NC lighthouse. It was built in It stands 158 feet tall (2 feet taller than Bodie Island). Its beacon is visible for 24 nautical miles! The Light- house has color mixed into its concrete, so it never needs to be repainted.

Currituck Lighthouse The Currituck lighthouse is 162 feet tall. It was built in It stands out because of its unpainted red brick. Its night beacon flashes every 20 seconds. There are 214 steps to the top of this lighthouse.

Cape Lookout Lighthouse Cape Lookout lighthouse is 163 feet tall. It was built in Its beacon flashes every 15 seconds, night and day. This light is visible for 19 miles. It takes 216 steps to get to the lantern room. Three full white diamonds face east and west. The north and south-facing sides have two full black diamonds and have a half of black diamond at the top and bottom of the tower.

Baldhead Island Lighthouse Baldhead Lighthouse (Old Baldy) was built in It is the oldest NC lighthouse, but it is no longer in service. Octagonal in design, it stands 109 feet, 10 ¾ inches tall. Bald Head island got its name from the eroded dunes that resembled a bald head.
