This helps a reader monitor their comprehension. Good readers think about what is happening in the text. The Graphic Organizer helps us organize our thoughts.

Good Readers… We will practice this strategy as we read. We will create a anchor chart to help us remember what good readers do when they read.

Responsible If someone is responsible, that person can be trusted to do a job on their own. Which would make you feel more responsible, doing an important job or playing a game? Why?

darted An animal that darted moved suddenly and quickly in a particular direction. What would you do if a cat darted in front of your bicycle?

jostling If the people in a crowd push or knock against you, they are jostling you. Would you want to be part of a jostling crowd? Why or Why not?

swerved If a car swerved, it turned suddenly to avoid hitting something. If a bus swerved would the passengers be surprised or relaxed?

attentive If someone is attentive, that person is carefully listening to or watching something. Why is it important to be attentive in class?

pounced A person or animal that pounced on something jumped on it eagerly in order to take it. What is another way of saying that a cat pounced on a mouse?

contradicting Contradicting someone is saying that what the person has said is wrong. Is contradicting a person the same as agreeing with that person? Explain.

Decoding/Word Attach Syllable Patterns: consonant +le Cattle cat/tle Cat (short a sound) Resemble re/sem/ble Re (long sound) sem (short sound)

Rules for decoding Divide a word into syllables before the consonant + le. If the previous syllable ends in a consonant, the syllable is usually said with the short vowel sound. (cat/tle) If the previous syllable ends in vowel, the syllable is usually said with the long sound. Longer words may contain both.

Practice Work with a partner Divide the words into syllables Decide if the vowel sound is long or short Trample table Maple gentle Example eagle Responsible needle
