You already studied words like these. What do you know about reading them? What are the words?Today we will learn about the long vowel sound in the second syllable of some words. 3

4 Word Work sup-pose Since there are two consonants together, I will try short u in the first syllable: sup. I see a –vowel-consonant-silent e pattern in the second syllable. With this pattern, I know the vowel usually stands for its long sound. I will blend this syllable: /p/-/ō/-/z/, pose. Let’s blend this word together: sup pose, suppose. 4

5 Word Work Take out your white boards. Let’s try the same thing with the following words. Let’s divide the word into syllables. Then say each syllable to yourself. Next, blend the word together and give me a thumbs up when you have blended the word. 5

When you read this selection, its important to think about the facts and details and decide something about them or draw conclusions. You should use the information in the selection and what you already know to draw conclusions. 28

29 Comprehension For example, if I read that a business had a Web site and that the business got big, I can use these facts along with what I know to draw a conclusion. I know that products can be ordered through a Web site. I can draw the conclusion that one reason that the business was successful was because it got a lot of orders through the Web site. 29

30 Comprehension As you read “Biz Kids,” look for facts and details that can help you draw conclusions about the kids and their businesses. Add you conclusions to the graphic organizer I am distributing along with the facts and details that help you draw the conclusions. 30

31 Read a Passage What have you learned about kid business. Today you will read a story called “Kid Biz.” Take out your student reader. Let’s take a picture walk through the passage. 31

32 Comprehension Turn to page 116. What do you think the title means? What kind of business do you think this girl started? Turn to page What do you see written on the notebook? Now let’s read the story. Do your best listening. I will ask follow up questions to monitor your comprehension. 32
