Slide 1 of 15 WALT Consider the influence that the media has on us and our day-to-day lives Understand how media can persuade us to think about something in a particular way. You and the Media Next

Slide 2 of 15 FACT!! Most young people between the ages of 5 and 14 watch over 20 hours of television each week.

Slide 3 of 15 Consider... What influence does TV have on you? Does it play too big a part in your life? Does it affect your views and values?

Slide 4 of 15 Starter You have a set of statements on the desk in front of you. Discuss each of these statements in turn

Slide 5 of 15 Watch this video… o6ZWZM

Slide 6 of 15 Based on the statements and the video… Write a short statement saying how much influence you think TV has on your views and values. EXPLAIN your answer!! Task 1

Slide 7 of 15 What influence does TV have on you? Does it play too big a part in your life? Does it affect your views and values? –EXPLAIN your answer!

Slide 8 of 15 Task 2 Does television give fair coverage of people from all sections of society? Charlie doesn’t think so... Read her statement

Slide 9 of 15 TV isn’t fair… I don’t think television presents a fair and balanced picture of society as it really is. I don’t like the way older people are shown. Too often they are stereotyped as being useless and out of touch. Also, there aren’t enough programmes featuring people with disabilities. It’s as though they are invisible. There are more people from ethnic minorities reading and reporting the news, but there should be more of them in things like soaps and situation comedies (sit-coms).

Slide 10 of 15 Discuss Charlie’s statement…  Does television present a fair picture of: Older people People with disabilities People from ethnic minorities

Slide 11 of 15 Fact or fiction… How true to life are soaps? Look at the sheets you have been given

Slide 12 of 15 Watch these two clips oKIQY&NR=1&feature=endscreenhttp:// oKIQY&NR=1&feature=endscreen oW8U_Qhttp:// oW8U_Q

Slide 13 of 15 Discuss Using what you have learned from the clips and statements discuss... how far the characters and stories in soaps are true to life why they are different from real life

Slide 14 of 15 Write …... A review of a soap that you have watched or know about What dramatic events are included? How realistic are they? Have any new characters suddenly appeared? What makes people watch it?

Slide 15 of 15 Plenary Think of 3 things you have learned Write down something that you want to know more about 
