3 GOAL FOR THE DAY In order to earn the 15 points for class today you must participate in agree/disagree activity, make at least 3 comments as an audience member, and participate in the article discussion at the end of class.

4 KEY VOCAB  Scripted- to be planned out  Portray- to represent  Media- mass communication (television, radio, and newspapers)  Superficial- appearing to be true, but not  Influential- have a big influence on something

5 AGREE/ DISAGREE I will say a statement and you must move to the right side of the room if you AGREE or the left side of the room if you DISAGREE.

8 “Reality television shows are real (do not have scripts or actors).”

9 “I would go on a reality television show (Big Brother, a dating show, a game show).”

10 “Reality television, like Keeping Up With the Kardashians, influences people to act in a certain way.”

17 NATHAN FOR YOU Nathan Fielder Nathan acts like he is a “business expert” and gives businesses the WORST suggestions to “help them succeed.” This is reality TV because nobody knows Nathan is “fake.”

18 DEBRIEF 1. What did the frozen yogurt man agree to in this episode? Why do you think he did? 2. What did the pizza guy agree to in this episode? Why do you think he did? 3. Do you think people change how they act because they’re on TV? Why? 4. Do you think reality TV is real? Why or why not? 5. Do you think it’s okay to “trick” people on TV? Why or why not? 6. Are there other reality television shows that “trick” people? Which ones?

19 HOW DO REALITY SHOWS AFFECT US? 1. You will be put in three teams and given an article that explains how a certain reality television affects people. 2. Read the article with your teammates. 3. Be prepared to present:  1. The type of reality show your article is about  2. How it affects people (good? bad? Neither?)  3. Your opinion about your article (do you agree or disagree)  4. After reading your article, what is your opinion about reality shows in general? Are they good or bad for society? Think about how we discussed the REALITY of these shows.
