What is scientific notation? Scientific notation is a way of rewriting large or small numbers so that you have one digit in the one’s place multiplied by some power of ten.

Describe the steps of rewriting a large number in scientific notation. Step 1: Move the decimal left, so that only one digit is in front of the decimal. Step 2: Multiply that number by a power of ten. (The exponent is how many times you had to move the decimal.)

Example 1: Write each number in scientific notation. (A)700,000 * move the decimal 7.0 * multiply by a power of ten 7.0 x 10 5 (The exponent is 5 because we moved the decimal 5 places.)

Example 1: Write each number in scientific notation. (B) 8,296,000 * move the decimal * multiply by a power of ten x 10 6 (The exponent is 6 because we moved the decimal 6 places.)

Example 1: Write each number in scientific notation. (C) 58,000 * move the decimal 5.8 * multiply by a power of ten 5.8 x 10 4 (The exponent is 4 because we moved the decimal 4 places.)

Example 2: Write each number in standard form. (A) x 10 2 * move the decimal right the number of the exponent 875.3

Example 2: Write each number in standard form. (B) 3.2 x 10 7 * move the decimal right the number of the exponent * fill in any open spaces with zeros 32,000,000

Example 2: Write each number in standard form. (C) x 10 1 * move the decimal right the number of the exponent 20.01
