Warm-up

4.9 Scientific Notation: Part I Positive Exponents Objective: To write and evaluate numbers in scientific notation and to calculate using scientific notation. Def(1): Scientific Notation provides a way to write numbers using powers of 10. – You write a number in scientific notation as the product of two factor. – The first factor is must be greater than or equal to 1 and less than 10. – The second factor is a power of 10. NOTE: Scientific notation is about decimal places, not zeros!

Steps to Translate from Standard Notation to Scientific Notation 1.Place a carrot after the first non-zero digit coming from left to right. 2.Count from the carrot to the current decimal place noting direction you are going (right is positive, left is negative). This number becomes the exponent of 10. 3.Replace the carrot with a new decimal point and drop any trailing zeros. 4.Rewrite the number using 10 to the power found in #2 above. NOTE: Scientific notation is about decimal places, not zeros!

Examples: 1)Translate 256,000,000 into scientific notation 2) Translate 0.00752 into scientific notation NOTE: Scientific notation is about decimal places, not zeros!

Steps to Translate from Scientific Notation to Standard Notation 1.Using the exponent of 10 as your direction and counting number, move the decimal point that direction and the number of spaces indicated by the exponent. 2.Place a new decimal point at the point you ended counting. 3.Rewrite the number with the new decimal point. NOTE: Scientific notation is about decimal places, not zeros!
