How to write Newspaper Articles

Newspaper Format

Purpose The purpose of a newspaper article is to inform their readers on facts, information or current events.

Headlines Headlines are found at the top of an article It describes what the article is about A great headline can communicate a full message to the audience It hooks the reader in to get them to want to read on

Bylines Bylines tell us who wrote the article This article is written By Michael McKisson And Erica Meltzer

Now Try it out… In your groups, write a headline and byline for the following newspaper pictures in the envelope that Mr. Papple handed out to you at the beginning of the lesson.

Lead Paragraph This paragraph is geared to get the reader’s attention and hook them into make them want to read on. It focuses on who, what, when, where, why and how. In your groups, take out the Lead Paragraphs from the articles that Mr. Papple gave you at the beginning of class. Read through the articles and highlight the 5W’s and 1H.

Now you try… In your groups, choose one of the pictures from the selection Write a catchy headline Write a Lead Paragraph that will hook the reader into wanting to read the article (Remember to include the 5W’s and 1H)
