Newton’s 1st Law of Motion
Year 10 Pathway C Mr. D. Patterson 1.  Recall Newton’s third law  Use Newton’s third law to explain the effects of collisions and other common events.
FORCES. FORCE: The cause of motion The cause is either a –Push or a –Pull.
Newton’s Laws Review. Name the Law What are the forces? Law: Forces: 1 st : Object at rest will stay at rest(balanced) 2 nd: F=ma (who has the most Newtons?)
Newton’s Second Law of Motion The net force on an object is equal to the product of its acceleration and its mass. Force = Mass X Acceleration.
Warm-up 1. If a toy train has a mass of 1.5 kg & accelerates at a rate of 20 m/s2, what is the amount of force acting on it? 2. Make a Venn diagram comparing/contrasting.
Laws of Motion GQ #2-3 Science/7 th grade. What do you know? What are Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion? – Discuss your ideas with your table.
Rolling On Objective: Students will apply Newton’s first law of motion to the behavior of a toy car.
I. FORCES.
Newton’s laws and periodic motion.  Objects at rest tend to stay at rest, while objects in motion tend to stay in motion, unless acted on by an outside.
Newton’s 1 st Law States: Force will cause a change in the motion of the object. An object at rest will stay at rest. Objects never stop moving. A resting.
Force A push or pull exerted on an object..
Motion The motion of an object can be measured. The position of an object, its speed, and direction can be represented on a graph. (C.S. 2.1, 3.2)
The push or pull on an object. Force or attraction between two objects.
Newton’s First Law of Motion
Newton’s First Law of Motion. First we need to define the word FORCE: The cause of motion (what causes objects to move) Two types of forces –Pushes –Pulls.
Balloon Racers. Balloon racers rely on Newton's Third Law of Motion. As the air rushes backward out of the balloon it pushes the car forward in the opposite.
Balloon Powered Race Cars. Objectives to create a balloon powered race car for maximum speed and distance to incorporate Newton's Laws of Motion to learn.
Goal: To understand Newton’s 2 nd law and its applications to motions. Objectives: 1)To learn about how accelerations work 2)To understand Newton’s Force.
Notes Force. Force is a push or pull exerted on some object. Forces cause changes in velocity. The SI unit for force is the Newton. 1 Newton = 1 kg m/s.

Forces * Newton’s Laws And Speed. Newton’s Laws First Law - An object at rest tends to stay at rest AND an object in motion tends to stay in motion.
Balloon Powered Race Cars. Objectives to create a balloon powered race car for maximum speed to incorporate Newton's Laws of Motion to use the formula.
Unit 3 – Energy, Motion, and Force Essential Questions What is energy? What forms can energy take? How does speed change? Why do things fall? How do things.
CHAPTER 2 MOTION. PS 10 a,b The student will investigate and understand scientific principles and technological applications of force, and motion. Key.
Newton’s Laws. Newton’s First Law: The Law of Inertia An object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by a force, and an object in motion will stay.
QUESTION 1: A 1500 kilogram drag racing car sits at the start line. The race begins and lasts 15.2 seconds. At the point that the drag racing car crossed.
Describing Motion Newton’s Laws. First we need to define the word FORCE: A push or a pull exerted on an object in order to change the motion of the object.
Notes: Motion and Forces A.What is motion? 1. An object is in motion if it involves a change in position relative to a reference point. 2. Distance is.
“Law of Acceleration” Forces can be BALANCED or UNBALANCED Balanced forces are equal in size (magnitude) and opposite in direction UNbalanced.

Newton Scooter Project Newton’s 3 rd Law of Motion

Purpose  To design and construct a vehicle powered ONLY through Newton’s 3 rd Law of Motion  Newton’s 3 rd Law – if one object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts an equal force on the first.

Requirements  Vehicle must use Newton’s 3 rd Law to move forward.  Can ONLY use scrap materials (paper, straw, string, cardboard, etc.)  Vehicle MUST travel forward 2 meters across the finish line. Must stay within a 1 meter width.

Limitations  You CANNOT interfere with movement of your vehicle.  You CANNOT use any form of electricity or pull of gravity to move vehicle.  The use of a “track” or string is permitted to help guide the vehicle
