1 Engineering Flight

2 Gravity Gravity is a force that pulls Every object has gravity
The more mass an object has the more gravity it has Gravity on Earth pulls everything to the center

3 Thrust To push something suddenly into a specific direction
The thrust causes the air to move over the wings The air is flowing around the object

4 Newton’s Laws of Motion
Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction Ex: releasing air from a balloon

5 Lift The wing pushes and pulls the air around it and the air pushes and pulls back up on the wing This upward force is called Lift The wing needs to be shaped to move air flow over the wing to overcome the pull of gravity

6 Calculating Flight Data
Distance (D): is a measurement from point A to point B Time (T): is the time that it takes to get from point A to point B Speed (Rate) is a way of measuring how quickly something is moving or being done Speed (Rate) = Distance Time

7 Practice If a car travels 400m in 20 seconds how fast is it going?
20 m/s If it takes Ashley 3 seconds to run from the batters box to first base at an average speed of 6.5 meters per second, what is the distance she covers in that time? A baseball is thrown a distance of 20 meters. What is its speed if it takes 0.5 seconds to cover the distance?

10 Practice If a car travels 400m in 20 seconds how fast is it going?
20 m/s If you move 50 meters in 10 seconds, what is your speed? 5 m/s You arrive in my class 15 seconds after leaving math which is 30 meters away. How fast did you travel? 2 m/s

11 Practice If a car travels 400m in 20 seconds how fast is it going?
20 m/s A baseball is thrown a distance of 20 meters. What is its speed if it takes 0.5 seconds to cover the distance? 40 m/s If it takes Ashley 3 seconds to run from the batters box to first base at an average speed of 6.5 meters per second, what is the distance she covers in that time? 2.17 m
