Unit 5.3 Fahrenheit 451

Thursday, November 21 2 Days Until Culmination!! Objective: I will understand the role of technology in Fahrenheit 451 and continue my theme tracker. Standards: RL.9-10.3, RL.9-10.10 Journal Question: What changes are happening in Montag? Why doesn’t Mildred understand how he feels? What is the “itch” Beatty is talking about that every fireman feels?

Theme: Advances in technology can make humans lonely. Scenario: Let's say you went to dinner with a group of friends last weekend. Before you met up, someone probably posted to Facebook, "Looking forward to sushi tonight!" before tagging everyone invited. As you gathered around the table someone might have snapped a few group shots with their iPhone and instantly uploaded them with a hip filter to Instagram. Then you each person turned to their phones to "Like" the picture, chatting with each other over the internet instead of over the table between you. When the food arrived you told the world how great your food was, probably shared a few pics. By the end of your dinner, you might have shared more words with your online followers than with the friends you ate with! Have you found yourself in this type of scenario before? What is wrong about this scenario?

Theme: Advances in technology can make humans lonely. How has technology in the book made people feel lonely? Write it in your theme tracker.

Compare/Contrast technological devices On one side of the chart, write 2-3 sentences of how this product is convenient or useful. On the other side, write 2-3 disadvantages of the product. Does the product remind you of anything we have today?

Parlor Wall (TV screen that takes up an entire wall) “But with all my knowledge and skepticism, I have never been able to argue with a one-hundred-piece symphony orchestra, full colour, three dimensions, and I being in and part of those incredible parlors.”

Spot-wavex scrambler (a personalized experience of TV – announcers talk to you directly) “Montag turned and looked at his wife, who sat in the middle of the parlor talking to an announcer, who in turn was talking to her. "Mrs. Montag," he was saying this, that, and the other. "Mrs. Montag-" Something else and still another. The converter attachment, which had cost them one hundred dollars, automatically supplied her name whenever the announcer addressed his anonymous audience, leaving a blank where the proper syllables could be filled in. A special spot- wavex scrambler also caused his televised image, in the area immediately about his lips, to mouth the vowels and consonants beautifully. He was a friend, no doubt of it, a good friend. “

Seashell Radio (small radios that fit into the ears like hearing aids or ear buds) “And in her ears the little Seashells, the thimble radios tamped tight, and an electronic ocean of sound, of music and talk and music and talk coming in, coming in on the shore of her unsleeping mind. The room was indeed empty.”

Written Response In a paragraph, overall, do you believe the use of advanced technology enriches our lives or makes us lonelier?
